What Is Neurotoxin?

Neurotoxins are a group of toxins that target muscle control in the body.

As we age, our muscles lose tone and their ability to contract and relax naturally. While we may not see these changes immediately, they can eventually become noticeable in fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the forehead, eyes, and mouth.

While this is a naturally occurring part of aging, it can cause men and women alike to feel self-conscious and insecure about how they look. The good news? There are plenty of non-invasive and minimally invasive options available to help you achieve a more youthful look without surgery – one of those being neurotoxin injections.

Cosmetic procedures incorporate neurotoxins to temporarily paralyze the muscles responsible for fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in their reduced appearance. Now, while the term “toxin” may sound scary, those used in cosmetic procedures are completely safe and highly effective.

When done by a licensed and trained professional, neurotoxin injections can help you achieve a more youthful appearance by targeting troublesome areas, including:

  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Deep forehead wrinkles
  • Smile lines
  • Stubborn frown lines between the eyebrows

Some of the most common neurotoxin injections include:

Botox®

Botox® is one of the most well-known neurotoxins available and is the brand name for botulinum toxin type A. Fermentation of the bacteria clostridium botulinum type A produces this neurotoxin, commonly referred to by its brand name, but also recognized by its generic name, onabotulinumtoxinA.

Once injected into the skin, this strain of botulinum toxin acts as a neuromuscular blocking agent that temporarily paralyzes the targeted muscles. This allows the muscles to relax, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in and around the injection site.

Xeomin®

Xeomin® is a Botox® alternative that also contains botulinum toxin type A. However, while Botox® is known to have a mix of added proteins and additives, Xeomin® is made without these components. This means that the purity of Xeomin is far higher than that of Botox®.

Also known by its generic name, incobotulinumtoxinA, Xeomin® works the same: it is injected into the skin to temporarily paralyze the muscles that cause wrinkles and fine lines.

Dysport®

Dysport®, commonly referred to by its generic name, abobotulinumtoxinA, is another neurotoxin that contains the active ingredient of botulinum toxin type A. It works in the same manner as the injectables mentioned earlier. However, it’s currently only approved for treating glabellar lines, otherwise known as the “eleven” lines between the eyebrows.

Are Neurotoxin Injections Right For You?

If you’re considering neurotoxin injections, you’re not alone. As of 2021, the most frequently researched cosmetic procedure in Canada was Botox, receiving approximately 18,000 searches. Further research shows that as of 2020, over 2.5 million women globally between the ages of 40-50 received botulinum toxin injections. But what are neurotoxin injections, and are they right for you? Here are a few things to consider before you make your decision:

Are Neurotoxins Safe?

As with any medical procedure, risks and benefits always need to be considered. However, when performed by a trained and licensed professional, such as Dr. Rose Wong and her team at Hush Beauty, Anti-Aging and Skin Care Centre, the chances of any serious complications are very low.
Possible side effects of neurotoxin injections include:

  • Bruising
  • Headache/Flu-Like symptoms
  • Pain at the injection site
  • Swelling at and around the injection site

While these are the most common side effects, they are temporary and should subside within a few days. However, there are other risks associated with neurotoxin injections that need to be considered, including:

  • Allergic reactions (leading to trouble speaking, swallowing, and breathing)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Vision problems

While rare, these side effects can occur and should not be taken lightly. Before considering neurotoxin injections, you’ll want to make sure that you and your physician go over all the possible risks and complications to ensure that you are a good candidate for neurotoxin injections.

Who Is Best Suited for Neurotoxin Injections?

If you’re still undecided about whether neurotoxin injections are suitable for you, it’s essential to contemplate your individual goals, concerns, as well as your overall health and well-being.

Since neurotoxin injections have potential side effects and risks, you must speak with your physician to ensure that you are a good candidate. Generally speaking, those who are good candidates for neurotoxin injections are those who:

  • Are overall healthy
  • Do not have an aversion to needles
  • Have no prior knowledge of allergic reactions to neurotoxin injection or any of its components
  • Have realistic expectations of what can be accomplished through neurotoxin injections
  • Have tried other anti-aging treatments, such as dermal fillers, and have not received the results that they were hoping for

If you are considering neurotoxin injections, consulting a board-certified physician with experience performing this procedure is essential. During your consultation, your physician will evaluate your individual goals and concerns while also going over your complete health history to help you determine if neurotoxin injections are the right option.

What to Expect During and After Your Neurotoxin Treatment

After you’ve had a consultation about receiving neurotoxin injections, there are a few things that you can expect to happen next:

Before Your Neurotoxin Treatment

There are a few things that you can do to prepare for your neurotoxin treatment. Your doctor will give you instructions to help ensure you have a safe and comfortable experience. These may include:

  • Avoid drinking alcohol
  • Avoid taking certain medications or blood thinners
  • Avoid using lotions, creams, or oils on your skin for a few days
  • Cleanse your face thoroughly before arrival

During Your Neurotoxin Treatment

Your doctor will begin cleansing your face when it’s time for your treatment. After preparing the skin, the practitioner will use a small needle to inject the neurotoxin into the target area. While most patients report little to no sensation, you might feel a slight pinch or sting as the needle penetrates the skin

The injection itself lasts only seconds, and you might receive an icepack to alleviate any discomfort. The appointment’s duration typically ranges from 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated.

After Your Neurotoxin Treatment

After your neurotoxin treatment, it’s normal to experience some redness and swelling at the injection site. This should subside within a few hours.

You’ll also be given aftercare instructions by your doctor, such as keeping the injection site clean and avoiding direct sunlight and other direct heat sources. Make sure you’re following these instructions to ensure optimal results.

Most patients notice results within two weeks, and the effects will continue to improve over time. While you may only require a single treatment to see results, you may need to schedule follow-up treatments to help maintain your results.
